from Daily Infographic by Lindsey Savino

Whether you are 17 or 67, Facebook is the standard method to make friends, to keep friends, to spy on friends and to invite friends to events. Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg championed the cause for Internet authenticity, encouraging users to have single online identities. On the opposite extreme of the argument, 4chan, a collaboration of anonymous users, has churned out both creative Internet trends and headline grabbing pranks. 4chan’s founder Christopher “Moot” Poole believes this anonymity is the key to online authenticity.

Today’s youth, Gen Y, likes brands contrary to Gen X who prefers NO NAME to brand X. The new youth associate themselves with the brands they love on social media, by sharing their brands’ content and sharing their experiences with those brands. The 18-24 year old age group in general are expecting huge change in how they will access content in the future. They also positively expect better engagement and interaction with those brands directly and through their advertising and marketing programs according to Microsoft Advertising.

Like publishers (see their needs here), advertisers also need to increase their ROI. However the ROI they’s looking to increase if with repect to their online advertising specifically. Moreover, advertisers are seeking to increase the reach of their campaigns. They are also looking for more flexible advertising vehicles, capable of adapting to their needs on a per campaign basis, offering the possibility of carrying their brand beyond the simple opportunity to be seen while also differentiating themselves from the competition – to stand out on the page and be seen.

6- The Web & Business Tools Startups Use Most [INFOGRAPHIC]

from Mashable | The Social Media GuideStartups by Jennifer Van Grove

Putting the likes of the super-funded aside (Color, anyone?), most early-stage startups operate on tight budgets and spend their dollars sparingly. A bevy of web services have made start-up costs all the more affordable, but now there’s the conundrum of nearly too much choice.

The folks at BestVendor surveyed 550 startup staffers — most in marketing and executive administration positions — on their favorite tools for email, accounting, web analytics, CRM, productivity, design, storage, payment processing, operations and so forth.

The social networks are here

The reason that social media marketing is so successful in today’s business environment is, as already outlined, down to the consumer mindset, rather than business strategists. Since the internet (and digital marketing in general) became common place, people have been working hard to avoid unwanted adverts. Things such as popup blockers and spam filters are rendering direct online advertising campaigns (such as email marketing) costly and useless.

8- The Death of the Funnel, long live the funnel

from The Social Customer by DaveBrock
I’ve been reading a lot of articles, some from people who should know better, declaring the death of the funnel.  I have to admit, I get frustrated and tired with a lot of this talk.  But more importantly, I think it demonstrates a complete misunderstanding about what the funnel really is.

9- Business Models for 5 Industries in Crisis

JULY 10, 2011, Wall Street Journal, By Don Tapscott, via @mitchjoel @wschroll

In our 2006 book Wikinomics, Anthony D. Williams and I looked at dozens of companies that have used the Internet to transform their business models and achieve tremendous success. However, in the five years since the book’s publication, we’ve noticed something striking: the rate of business model innovation has not accelerated. Yes, some individual companies have achieved competitive advantage by exploiting the web and networked business models. But overall the gains have been modest.
